Franchetti 2012 wine is made with Petit Verdot grapes that grow at a thousand meters on the north side of Etna, in Contrada Guardiola. Contrada Guardiola was formed 15 thousand years ago by the last of the great pyroclastic explosions that threw a deep deposit of ash and pumice on the ground. After that, the volcano changed and the lava flows began. Most of the vineyards today grow on the lava flows that covered the volcano, but some areas such as Contrada Guardiola have remained uncovered.
The petit verdot was harvested in early November in what was one of the best harvests done on the volcano. It is debated among producers which is the best, whether 011 or 012. In 2012, the long and dry summer made the grapes so appetizing to taste that already at the beginning of October many producers blindly gave themselves over to to collect. The wisest and most fortunate, on the other hand, waited a little longer and were rewarded by two short rains that sent the vines through a wonderful final ripening process, thus saving the grapes from withering and the wines from sourness.
This year there is a novelty in the wine, the smoky flavor, which is due to the big fire that affected the entire property in August, immersing the vineyards in smoke for a long time. This is a pleasant novelty for wine but we hope this is the last time it happens for the vineyard. Moreover, the wine is black, light, fine and has wonderful fruit.
